Matthew Adkins, M.ED.

Mr. Adkins studied Illustration as an undergraduate student at Virginia Commonwealth University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts & Design. Following a fifteen-year career in the wine industry, he decided to make a career change and continued his educational journey, earning a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at the College of William & Mary.
While earning his Master’s degree, Mr. Adkins had the opportunity to work in the outpatient settings with adults and teens. He was able to help clients with a wide variety of concerns including depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, bipolar and mood related disorders, grief, trauma, relationship challenges, life transitions. substance use, and anger management. He is passionate in helping clients achieve their goals and a fulfilling life.
Mr. Adkins therapeutic approach draws from Existential, Cognitive-Behavioral, Transpersonal and Mindfulness-based techniques that emphasize the autonomy, individuality, and strengths of his clients. His therapeutic approach is influenced by his creative background, Eastern philosophy, and his experiences as a father. His clinical interests include Spiritually-Transformative Experiences, LGBTQIA+
affirmative counseling, and Eco-anxiety.
In collaborating with his clients to identify and work towards their therapeutic goals, Mr. Adkins takes a personalized, holistic approach that incorporates and responds to his client’s sociocultural backgrounds, beliefs, identities, and worldview. He strives to create a therapeutic environment that is collaborative, non-judgmental, and affirming in which clients are able to grow, transform, and live more meaningful lives.
