Hollis Stewart, PhD

Dr. Stewart, a Durham, North Carolina native, received her psychology degree from Wake Forest University. She then moved to Richmond to work as a research assistant at the Child and Family Institute, concentrating on grants for youth with serious emotional disorders. This role revealed the need for more empathetic and culturally sensitive providers, prompting her to earn a doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University.
Dr. Stewart gained clinical experience at state psychiatric hospitals, community service boards, outpatient clinics, a university counseling center, and a residential rehab for mothers and children, focusing on child care. After interning at Eastern Virginia Medical School, she joined the Department of Juvenile Justice, finding work with youth and families both rewarding and challenging. She developed expertise in managing suicidal ideation, crises, and various disorders. At her resignation, she was Treatment Director at Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center. Dr. Stewart is dedicated to providing quality care to marginalized and underserved populations.
Dr. Stewart primarily uses cognitive-behavioral therapy and employs an eclectic and holistic approach. She adopts a client-centered, strength-based perspective, recognizing clients as experts and learning from them. She will help you understand how your thought patterns impact your feelings and develop insights into life events that have led to negative thoughts and unhealthy coping skills. With extensive experience, she serves as a tool to assist adolescents, young adults, and families in the change process. She strives to provide humor while clients learn about themselves in a nonjudgemental, empathic space.
